A two-month-old boy reported missing Tuesday from his Brooklyn Park home is back with his mother. Thursday, the mother's longtime friend, Thalia Benson, 34, was charged with kidnapping the child.
The criminal complaint says Alonzo had fallen asleep on the couch with her son, Elijah. At about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, she awoke to find her child no longer on the couch and Benson also gone.
Alonzo assumed her grandparents, who were also staying at the apartment, had taken Elijah into their bedroom, the complaint said. She then put her other toddler to bed and fell back asleep. Alonzo called police Tuesday morning after the grandparents awoke and said they had not seen the child. Benson arrived Tuesday morning at Alonzo's apartment just before police were called.
The criminal complaint says police were alerted about Benson as a possible suspect after her own relatives became suspicious of her. Police drove to Benson's St. Paul apartment and located the baby in a vehicle parked outside. Benson's boyfriend was in the vehicle with the child. The complaint says Benson told her boyfriend that she recently had given birth and that the baby was his. Benson later gave a recorded confession to police admitting to kidnapping the child.
Despite the kidnapping charges, the boys' mother told 12 news she's not angry at her friend.
"I guess she's really sick and I didn't know she had anxiety, I didn't know she was on medication," said Alonzo during an interview Wednesday with 12 News reporter Renee Banot.
Alonzo also told 12 News that Benson badly wanted a baby and thought her friend possibly had a miscarriage.
Benson remains in jail and is scheduled to make her first court appearance Friday afternoon.
